BHOPAL: In a first big initiative by state health department, Gwalior district administration has equipped its government hospital with a high-tech surveillance system inside special newborn intensive care unit (SNICU), providing parents and attendants 24x7 facility to keep vigil on their babies without entering the ward. This novel technology has been launched in District Hospital, Morar in Gwalior.

"The live broadcast facility would not only save newborns from infection by intrusion of kin inside the ward, but also avert conflict between hospital staff and attendants over allowing entry in SNICU. Also, baby swapping allegations will be curbed," said district collector Dr Sanjay Goyal.
"Just click the bed number and you can see your baby live through an app. No need to go inside the sensitive ward and pose risk to baby. Installation costs are low," he said.
The surveillance system also has a facility to broadcast pictures of the ward from a distant location. However, this function has been disallowed temporarily.
Authorities have installed a pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) camera, which can be remotely controlled by automation systems. It's a high-resolution camera, which digitally zooms and pans into portionsof the subject. Camera shows the result on LED screens, which is fixed outside the ICU, where parents and relatives can monitor their child.
Talking to TOI, one of the mothers, Sujata, said, "I am thankful to the hospital authority for providing this facility. Now, I can always monitor my baby's condition without hassle."
